Roamed by the feral Tasmanian Devil and the spotted-tailed quoll, Tasmania is, at least in part, an untouched wilderness spanning rainforest, beaches, high mountain plains, and lakes sailed by black swans. A softer side – historic towns, fertile farmlands, and pleasant cities – also adds to its charm, belying a darker side of the island’s history, when the land doubled as a detention center for convicts.
To experience ultimate adventure, breathtaking scenery, and exhilarating freedom . . . in a former penal colony. You'll have a devil of a time flying over pristine wilderness, rafting through deep gorges on the Franklin River, and hiking the pink-granite outcrops around Wineglass Bay.
There is a wide range of accommodation options across Tasmania, including standard hotels, charming guesthouses, colonial bed-and-breakfasts, outdoor-themed lodges, and simple cabins. Prices are generally cheaper than on the mainland – exclusive properties rent for $250+ per night, while budget accommodations can be found for under $150 per night.

Tasmania is known for its fresh seafood, including crayfish, salmon, oysters, crab, and fresh-caught trout, so expect to find a lot of it on restaurant menus across the country. The food is generally good quality, as Tasmania prides itself on its fresh, organic approach. In season, fresh fruit, such as apples and stone fruit, asparagus and young goat cheeses also find themselves on the menu. Restaurants of excellent quality can be found island-wide, but the city of Hobart has the greatest culinary diversity.
