Bangkok This Asian metropolis harbors countless surprises. Beneath its often gritty surface, Bangkok rocks with glittering temples, trendy neighborhoods, and sizzling shopping and nightlife possibilities. See our Bangkok Travel Guide

Central Plains Among fertile plains, the ancient towns of Ayutthaya and Lopburi await with historical landmarks, while the hillside town of Kanchanaburi is the gateway to serene riverside trips along the Death Railway and near national parks.

The North Home to the ancient Lanna kingdom, this region’s culture stands out from the rest of the country. Chiang Mai is the cultural hub, while the hilly east beckons with hill tribe villages and scenic countryside landscapes. Visit the once-notorious Golden Triangle, where Burma, Laos, and Thailand intersect, and finish with elephant rides along the Mekong River. =See our Chiang Mai Travel Guide

The Northeast The Kingdom’s biggest and most backward region is home to the Isaan people, who maintain their own culture, language, and cuisine blending Thai and Laotian influences. Thailand’s most popular national park, Khao Yai, is the gateway to the stunning stone temple complexes of Phimai and Phanom Rung.

Gulf Coast & Islands The East Coast is awash with package tourists, so the royal seaside resort of Hua Hin further south, with its row of seafood restaurants, three-mile-long beach, and vibrant night market, is a better choice. The Koh Tao archipelago is a diver’s heaven.

Koh Samui A tropical paradise with jungles, beautiful white-sand beaches, a thriving nightlife, and a plethora of first-rate resorts. One hour south from Bangkok by plane, its compact size means you can circle it in one day and then relax on the beach.

Phuket and Andaman Coast Thailand’s west coast is littered with bizarre limestone rocks jutting out of azure waters. A visit to Phang Nga Bay is a must. Though geared towards package tourists, the large island of Phuket offers some of Thailand’s most perfect beaches and coolest nightlife. Further north, Khao Lak is a string of low-key, resort-filled beaches, as are Krabi town and Lanta Island. See our guide to Phuket.

Koh Samet The closest island paradise to Bangkok is about two hours southwest of the city. Invitingly clear water, super-clean beaches, and fantastic seafood restaurants beg Bangkokians and discriminating travelers. Smart, low-key boutique resorts mean less backpackers and more style.
