Poking out in the city skyline is the turret of this intricately carved Indo-Aryan temple, which was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh in 1651 (the city was originally founded in 1568 by Maharaja Udai Singh II). The climb up the temple’s many steps ends with the image of Lord Vishnu, who is enshrined in black stone at the main altar.

While the pricy admission to this top floor area within the Fateh Prakash Palace (now a hotel) includes access to a rare collection of English crystal amassed by one of Udaipur’s kings, it’s the lofty and lavish Durbar Hall, a royal arena where the king held court, that’s the real showstopper.

Built in 1710 by Sangram Singh II, this ornamental garden was the personal playground of the princess’s 48 maids and attendants, who all came as part of her dowry.
