Vienna When To Go

Peak Season: July to September
Vienna’s normally tranquil streets fill to capacity during the scorching summer months. The obvious advantage of visiting Vienna in late summer is that the days last until 9pm and there are boundless opportunities for lounging and picnicking in the city’s gorgeous parks. But don’t expect to see as many locals: the Viennese abandon their city and flock to Austria’s lake districts during these months.
Low Season: December to April
Most visitors to Austria bypass Vienna altogether and head straight to the Alps during the winter months. Vienna is quiet between February and April, when many locals also head to the mountains as often as possible.
Sweet Spot: May and June
Head to Vienna in late spring and early summer to bask in the warmth without fighting the late-summer crowds. Many outdoor events, including the Rathaus Film Festival, begin in late-May or early-June.
