Zagreb, the pocket-sized Croatian capital (one of Europe’s youngest) and commerce center, is divided between an upper town and a lower town that share a confrontational history. Now all is peaceful and the city bustles with cosmopolitan energy and a vivacious café culture. Legend has it that Zagreb, loosely translated as “to scoop,” received its name from a woman hastily cupping drinking water from a spring (now Manduševac Fountain, a popular meeting point in the city center). Today’s culture-thirsty visitors can get the scoop by exploring Zagreb’s cobblestone streets, funky arcades, and first-rate museums.
To stroll through a maze of medieval streets, munch on delicious croaterra (traditional cake), and party-hop through the dusk-till-dawn nightlife scene.
