Long a strategic crossroads of the Baltic Sea, the capital of Finland has been at various times under the control of Sweden and Russia (Finland finally gained independence in 1917). Amid those influences Helsinki has developed a distinct, minimalist style all its own, with plenty of museums, hotels and restaurants in which to exhibit it all. As capitals go, it’s hard to find one more laid back, and the nearby countryside makes for easy, lovely escapes.
Why GoTo immerse yourself in Finland's laid-back culture through world-class art museums, saunas, theaters, and historical sites.
