Phoenix Money-Saving Tips

First Fridays Art Walk

On the first Friday of every month, Artlink (artlinkinc.wordpress.com) sponsors a self-guided art walk of over 70 galleries and other arts-related spaces from 6-10pm. A free shuttle runs between the different venues.

Rent Some Wheels

The Valley of the Sun’s 2,000 square-mile sprawl makes a car and a map an absolute must – sights are just too far apart to see on foot, and solid public ground transportation options are limited.

Wild Wild West

The Sonoran Desert is home to an exotic palette of wildlife – coyotes, javelinas, gila monsters, tarantulas – don’t wander into the wilderness unless you’re ready for a meet and greet.

Hot and Cold

As is typical of desert climates, expect about 30-degree temperature fluctuations between daytime highs and nighttime lows in the winter and less of a change in summer. Bring a lightweight jacket or a sweater for the cool evening hours during the winter months and the full-blast A/C you’ll find indoors during the summer.

Protect Yourself

Year-round, hats, sunglasses, and sun screen are a must while under the desert sun.

Drink Up

Stay hydrated and carry plenty of water around with you at all times, including in your rental car. The sun can get extremely hot and it’s wise to be ready in case of emergencies.

Speed Not

Beware of traffic cameras on Valley streets and highways – stay within 10 miles of the posted speed limit to avoid a ticket.

Live Music Included

Many resorts offer free music either in lounges or outdoors. For the price of a cocktail, you can enjoy some local tunes in a swanky setting. JW Marriott Desert Ridge, Intercontinental Montelucia, and the Westin Kierland are just some of the hotels whose music acts you’ll want to inquire about while you’re in town.

Get Happy

Phoenix and Scottsdale restaurants, bars, and lounges have some of the best happy hour deals around. Many high-end eateries are affordable to the masses, usually between the hours of 3 and 7pm.

Clip Your Coupons

Check out the Visit Phoenix website (www.visitphoenix.com/special-offers/index.aspx) for discounts on lodging, dining, spas, and attractions.

Cheap Flights

Phoenix is a hub for popular low-cost carrier Southwest. With routes to most major cities across the U.S. and no bag fees, Southwest is a smart choice for getting to the Phoenix area.

Embrace the Heat

Summer may bring sweltering temps, but it's also the best time to score deals. Travelers can often find a room at even the best resorts for under $200/night, and discounts abound for dining and greens fees.
