Beach lovers have numerous options for sandy diversity farther up and down the coast, nature lovers should hit the road for the surrounding parks that showcase Florida's wetlands, and urbanites in need of a bigger city fix can find it across Alligator Alley in Fort Lauderdale or Miami. It’s remarkably easy to get around Florida with a car; these day trips range from 30 minutes to just over two hours of driving time.

Day Trips from Naples

Everglades City

Everglades National Park's Gulf Coast Visitor Center in Everglades City is the jumping off point for exploring the Ten Thousands Islands, a series of mangrove isles and waterways that extend all the way into Florida Bay at the top of the Keys. Guided boat tours are available, or canoe rentals for the more intrepid.

Everglades National Park – Shark Valley

Cars must stay in the entrance parking lot at Shark Valley. Visitors have the choice of walking or biking the flat, paved 15-mile loop trail or catching one of the tram rides to observe alligators and water birds in the country's largest subtropical wilderness. Don't miss the panoramic views from the observation tower at the halfway mark.

Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale ditched its spring-break rep for a family-friendly and upscale vibe, but it's still more casual overall than Naples. Beaches have golden sand rather than white, its coral reef system makes for better diving than in the Gulf, and by virtue of size, there are more entertainment options, especially for gay travelers. Marco Island

Because of its proximity, Marco Island is often mentioned in the same breath as Naples; indeed, it’s an easy jaunt for a change of scenery. Tigertail Beach has five boardwalks leading through mangroves to its white sands and food concession. Several eco-tour companies run trips from the island, and there is a sizable arts community with several galleries worth perusing.

Miami

The Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach, burgeoning urban arts scene in Wynwood and the Miami Design District, and the downtown developments around the performing arts center make a trip across Alligator Alley to the Magic City an action-packed outing. See our Miami Travel Guide

Sanibel Island/Captiva Island

This island duo demands a slow pace to appreciate its 15 miles of powdery-white beaches, 22 miles of bike paths, and zero traffic lights. The quaint, restored buildings of Sanibel's historic village date to the late-19th and early-20th centuries. Sunsets are particularly dazzling here, bolstering the islands' reputation for romance.
