It doesn’t really make sense to go island-hopping from Kauai to Oahu, Maui, or the other Hawaiian islands on a single day trip, so we’ve listed activities within Kauai that require at least a full day’s outing to truly appreciate. Though the island is relatively small (it takes a little over two hours to drive from one side to the other), you could spend a month exploring it and still not see everything.

Day Trips from Kauai

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge

Wedgetail shearwaters, albatross, and boobies are among the seabirds that call Kilauea Point home. Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles frolic in nearshore waters, and whales are viewable in winter and spring.

Koke‘e State Park

An abundance of native plants and birds populate this lush 4,345-acre wilderness. Hike, camp, fish for trout, or hunt boar. Don’t forget a jacket – it gets chilly at night.

Na Pali Coast State Park

Coastline, cliffs, waterfalls, streams, and Eden-like forests comprise the sprawling 6,175-acre park where you can hike a segment or all of the 11-mile trail to Kalalau Valley. It’s Kauai’s ultimate camping trip.

Waimea Canyon State Park

The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is one of Hawaii’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. See more shades of rust than you can imagine stacked 3,600 feet deep above the river at the bottom of the gorge.
