Fairmont Copley Plaza
Address: 138 St. James Ave.
Neighborhood: Back Bay
A gala opening in 1912 marked the birth of the Fairmont Copley Hotel, and nearly a century later, the property overlooking Copley Square enjoys landmark status as the epitome of classic style and luxury lodging. Its 7-story majestic façade illustrates French and Venetian Renaissance architecture, while inside an impressive 5000-square-foot golden-hued lobby is adorned with marble columns and crystal chandeliers. The downstairs Oak Room restaurant serves some of the best steaks in Boston, while the adjacent Oak Bar deals out inspired martinis and live music on most nights. A $34 million renovation in 2003 revamped the 383 classically-designed guest rooms (including 17 suites), which feature high ceilings, fine fabrics in ruby and gold color schemes, pillow-top mattresses, and custom-designed furniture – some guestrooms even have chandeliers and walk-in closets. A major addition in the renovations was the introduction of Fairmont Gold, an exclusive "hotel within a hotel" on the fourth floor, which has its own check-in and private lounge that's set up to resemble a turn of the century townhouse.
