Nantucket Money-Saving Tips

Ferry

The most popular way to get to Nantucket is by ferry from Hyannis. Steamship Authority (www.steamshipauthority.com) and Hyline Cruises (www.hy-linecruises.com) both run high-speed and traditional ferry service. High-speed trips take an hour; traditional passages take an hour and 50-minutes.

Car free

Don't bring one – it's unnecessary and expensive. Taxis are a far more affordable option.

Beachy keen

Jump on a shuttle instead of walking long distances to the beach – summer service is available to most beaches from downtown Nantucket Town.

Foot friendly

You’ll do a lot of walking so bring comfortable, broken-in shoes and sneakers; you might even want to consider hiking boots.

Rain alert

As they say all over New England: If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute. No matter the season, it’s probably going to rain at some point so bring an umbrella and a poncho – and keep one (or both) with you at all times.

Mist alert

Occasionally, mist settles over the island, which is rather moody and interesting . . . unless you were planning a trip to catch the sunset or enjoy a romantic dinner-with-a-view. Watch the forecast and plan your most anticipated activities accordingly.

Stock up

If you’re visiting during the height of summer, make sure to pack beach essentials like sunscreen, after-sun lotion, and plenty of hats. You’ll pay a premium for these items on the island.

Local flavor

If you need a good jolt of caffeine in the morning – or you just like sipping on your decaf latte while you shop – pay homage to Nantucket Coffee Roasters, a perennial local favorite.
