Las Vegas Local Tips
Priceless Views
Keep the $16 you would have spent climbing the Stratosphere Tower in your pocket and head to the bar at Mix Lounge atop THEhotel at Mandalay Bay before 10pm for a better, not to mention free, view of the Vegas Strip.
Make a Day Trip Outside the City
Though the majority of vacationers flock to Sin City for its gambling, shows, and nightlife, heading beyond the city limits to attractions like the Hoover Dam ($11 for adults; www.usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam) and the Lake Mead Recreational Area (only $5 per person or $10 per vehicle; www.nps.gov/lake) is a great way to take a breather from Vegas' money vacuum.
Buffets, Buffets, Buffets
All-you-can-eat restaurants will be one of your biggest money savers. There are buffets all over Vegas, and the earlier you go, the more you'll save. Go to the breakfast buffets (the least expensive, with lunch and dinner costing a few more dollars) when they're about to close and where you can still get lunch food.
Kid-Friendly Circus Shows
If you're bringing the little ones along, free circus shows are offered at the Circus Circus Casino, the world's largest permanent circus (www.circuscircus.com). Performances start at 11am daily and include acrobatics, magic shows, and juggling.
Take Your Budget to the Bellagio
The Fountains of Bellagio is the famous show of choreographed water and lights, and best of all, it's open to the public for free. Check the hotel's website for times (www.bellagio.com), and make sure to stop by the Bellagio's Conservatory and Botanical Gardens (also free) for its expertly-designed arrangement of fauna from all over the world, charming bridges and ponds, and romantic gazebos.
Big Spender
Set a spending limit before you go – it’s all too easy to overspend amongst the glitz and glamour of the Strip. The Fastest Route
When you arrive in Vegas, tell your taxi driver to take Paradise Road into the city. Otherwise they will take the Airport Tunnel which will cost you about $10 more.Free Drinks
Avoid the bar if you’re gambling – most casinos serve complimentary alcoholic beverages to guests while they’re on the floor. Ladies will find many clubs start the night with discounts for women on admission and drinks – ask around to see where you can get the best deal.Frequent Player’s Cards
All casinos have complimentary player's cards that track your wins and losses. Pick one up to increase your chances of receiving perks like free meals and rooms.Be a Lounge Rat
Lost all your cash at the blackjack table but still itching to see a show? Head to the lounge. Most casinos host ongoing musical acts there free of charge, and there’s plenty of talent to enjoy. Our Experts save you money with travel deals and advice
Take regular transport rather than tourist buses – it's cheaper and you'll get to mix and mingle with the locals.
