Taos

Taos is tiny, and is more of a destination where visitors wake up at the crack of dawn to explore the great outdoors, than one that’s conducive to partying ‘til the crack of dawn. Still, there are a handful of inviting establishments that are perfect for downing a pint while recounting the day’s adventures, for kicking back to live music, or for enjoying a refined nightcap. Many performing arts events – from chamber music to theater performances – are scheduled throughout the year; check the Taos County Chamber of Commerce’s events calendar for details.

Taos Nightlife

Adobe Bar/Taos Inn

This is the hands-down pulse of the Taos nightlife scene, situated at the historic Taos Inn (and as the site of what was once the town well, a long-established gathering place). Free live music featuring local talent, a crackling fireplace, and a delectable menu of signature margaritas often leaves standing room only amid the casual, cozy digs. The lounge also offers a light New Mexico bistro menu.

Alley Cantina

Set just off of Taos plaza, this nightlife gem boasts some 400 years of history - little wonder, considering it's located within Taos's oldest building, which features construction dating back to the 16th century. Live bands, pool, shuffleboard, and assorted board games comprise the entertainment while a Southwestern-inspired bar menu and plenty of drink specials keep guests drawn to the bar. The bar boasts some interesting side history, to boot: a former Taos governor's daughter is said to haunt the building, while Kit Carson and Buffalo Bill Cody are reported to have been onetime patrons.

Anaconda Bar

Borrowing its name from the large anaconda sculpture that wraps around the ceiling above the bar, this is Taos's sleekest watering hole, with a décor that features Asian accents and a 1,100 gallon salt-water aquarium. Popular with visitors and locals alike, live entertainment, including DJs and live bands, are featured nightly. Nosh on tasty tapas from the bar menu and wash them down with one of the bar's signature margaritas.

Caffe Tazza

Serving simple but tasty coffeehouse fare and catering to the artsy bohemian crowd, Caffe Tazza is one of the oldest and most happening coffeehouses in Taos. The terrace draws a crowd in the summer while the rest of the year, avid readers and performers alike gather inside to view live entertainment, or to read one of the free periodicals.
