Boutique-hopping in Woodstock

It’s come a long way since its ’60s and ’70s tie-dyed glory days. Today’s Woodstock (a town so cute that everyone in NYC seems to flock to it) is brimming with galleries, upscale clothing boutiques, and an assortment of casual cafés, and elegant restaurants.

Catskill Region Farmers Market

Any worthwhile New York City chef knows that a lot of the city’s fresh produce, dairy, and meat come from the bountiful Catskills region. Visitors would be remiss not to visit a few farms, fruit orchards, or farmer’s markets during their stay. We recommend the Catskill Region Farmers Market, in operation from July-October.

Hike to Kaaterskill Falls

Popularized by the Hudson River School of Painters in the 18th century, these cascading waterfalls are a short hike from Route 23A in East Windham and part of the breathtaking 24-mile Escarpment Trail that affords the area’s best landscape views.

Hunter Mountain Snowboarding

Whether you’re goofy footed or regular, this is New York’s premier slope to improve snowboarding skills. Busloads of Burton-clad hipsters arrive by the hour to perfect their ollies and butters. Regular skiing is available too.

Ski Hunter Mountain

The second highest peak in the Catskills, snowy Hunter Mountain is only about 2 hours north of Manhattan, making its scenic slopes a popular weekend destination for New Yorkers (so plan a weekday trip to avoid the crowds). Hunter has long attracted Burton-clad snowboarding hipsters looking to perfect their ollies and butters, and its state-of-the-art ski facilities tout user-friendly lifts and terrain designed specifically with the novice in mind. Downhill enthusiasts can also enjoy Hunter's popular snow-tubing park, with two tows and up to nine chutes (42-inch minimum height). Regular skiing is available too.

Tubing the Esopus River

During summer months, Phoenicia is a popular base for river tubing expeditions that snake through the chilly, untamed Esopus River. F/S Tubing provides you with gear and transportation.

Ziplining at Hunter Mountain

Dedicated adrenaline junkies and timid travelers alike can get their fix at Hunter Mountain’s New York Zipline Adventure tours, a set of three zipline courses that cover nearly 5 miles, with one single line totaling more than 3,000 feet in length. The SkyRider Tour (which opened in January 2011), the longest and highest canopy tour in North America, soars 600 feet above the forest floor, while the more subdued MidMountain Tour traverses six ziplines, four bridges, and one rappel. Families with youngsters in tow can tackle the Adventure Tower, a race to the top of the 60-foot-high elevated obstacle course via ropes and swinging bridges.
