Ski Hunter Mountain

The second highest peak in the Catskills, snowy Hunter Mountain is only about 2 hours north of Manhattan, making its scenic slopes a popular weekend destination for New Yorkers (so plan a weekday trip to avoid the crowds). Hunter has long attracted Burton-clad snowboarding hipsters looking to perfect their ollies and butters, and its state-of-the-art ski facilities tout user-friendly lifts and terrain designed specifically with the novice in mind. Downhill enthusiasts can also enjoy Hunter's popular snow-tubing park, with two tows and up to nine chutes (42-inch minimum height). Regular skiing is available too.

Ziplining at Hunter Mountain

Dedicated adrenaline junkies and timid travelers alike can get their fix at Hunter Mountain’s New York Zipline Adventure tours, a set of three zipline courses that cover nearly 5 miles, with one single line totaling more than 3,000 feet in length. The SkyRider Tour (which opened in January 2011), the longest and highest canopy tour in North America, soars 600 feet above the forest floor, while the more subdued MidMountain Tour traverses six ziplines, four bridges, and one rappel. Families with youngsters in tow can tackle the Adventure Tower, a race to the top of the 60-foot-high elevated obstacle course via ropes and swinging bridges.
