New York City

iStock International
Architectural envelope-pushing, edgy locales, gentrification controversies. Welcome to New York City’s latest hotel scene! Dozens of new properties have opened their doors in recent years, standing out in parts of the city like the Financial District and the East Village as brazen experiments diverging from the old Midtown formula, breaking the mold of the typical characterless tower or sleepy boutique – and their amenities aren’t shabby either. Still, NYC is one of America’s priciest destinations, with a wealth of deluxe hotels ($300-plus), a growing number of mid-range properties ($150 to $250), and relatively few decent budget options ($150 or less). If you do go the “budget” route, expect teeny-tiny quarters and keep in mind that the Big Apple’s versions may not have all the perks of comparably-priced lodgings elsewhere.
