Portland’s laid-back neighborhoods are quaint but enviable. Unlike larger cities that boast tourist-friendly Chinatown and Little Italy districts, Portland’s best neighborhoods are likely to include a several-block-long stretch vaunting lively brew pubs, local galleries, used book and record stores, and a smattering of hip restaurants.

Portland Neighborhoods

Nob Hill

The name says it all. Upscale boutiques, mani-pedis, and high-end stylists all serve the ladies-who-lunch crowd in this fancy upper-northwest section of Portland.

Pearl District

Centered around Powell’s City of Books, this vibrant post-industrial neighborhood is the hot locale for trendy hotels, galleries, condos and restaurants.

Old Town/Chinatown

Once sketchy, this is where you’ll find the popular Portland Saturday Market, the Classical Chinese Gardens, and a couple funky hipster stores tossed in for good measure.

Southwest/Cultural District

More like a traditional downtown, but also containing Pioneer Courthouse Square, site of rallies, concerts and events. Further south are theatres, museums, and the Center for the Performing Arts.

Hawthorne District

The bohemian side of Portland, with hemp shops, independent boutiques, and movie houses where you can have pizza and brew while watching a flick.

Northeast/North Portland

This large section of town is the most multicultural and least gentrified side of town. You'll find many ethnic restaurants ranging from Ethiopian to traditional Mexican.

Alberta Arts District

Located within Northeast/North Portland, this arty area is slowly turning into Portland’s most happening ’hood. Galleries, brewpubs, and quirky shops abound. Be sure to check out the art hop on the last Thursday of each month.

West End

Happening Stark Street with its mix of hot hotels, chic restaurants, gay bars, and cultural activities is turning this area into the city’s latest must-hang-out-in neighborhood.
