Things to do in Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park

This otherworldly landscape of orange- and red-hued sandstone is set along scenic U.S. Route 89, past roaming elk and buffalo and signs selling 6- to 10-acre lots. With one of the clearest and darkest night skies on the continent, stargazing is prime and canyon sunsets spectacular – just don’t rush to catch a glimpse: driving too fast on the empty roads could end up with a tussle with the cops or worse, increase the dangerous prospect of hitting a mule deer.

Drive or Hike Zion National Park

With its 8,000-feet-tall peaks and 230 square miles of cliffs, rivers, and hiking trails, Zion leaves no shortage of sites to explore with the most concentrated stretch along the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive. The park banned cars a few years ago (helping to restore its natural splendor), so everyone takes energy-efficient minibuses. An audio track describing the surrounding landscape simplifies millions of years of geology into informative nuggets. If you go it on foot, just be careful not to topple off Angels Landing – the vertical monolith has claimed the lives of several unfortunate hikers through the years.

Visitors can rent the boats at the main Wahweap Marina in Page, Arizona, or at the Bullfrog Marina in Bullfrog, Utah. Not nautically savvy? Utah Road Trip

Route 66 and California’s coastal Highway 1 have plenty of ardent worshippers, with good reason. But for a drive on the wild side, nothing beats zipping through southern Utah’s national parks. No fewer than five phenomenal national parks in Utah compete for road-tripping travelers in search of the great outdoors. A series of scenic byways connect this quintet of land preserves, leading to such gems as Bryce Canyon National Park, with its freakish landscapes of orange- and red-hued sandstone pinnacles stretching towards the horizon, in an ostensible display of extraterrestrial terrain. Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Canyonlands possess starkly spectacular scenery and overflow with possibilities for adventure. 2010 Smart Luxury Award winner
