Virginia Beach Money-Saving Tips

Plan your parking strategy

It’s no fun battling the summer crowds for a parking space near the beach. If a parking space isn’t included in your hotel arrangements, or you want to drive elsewhere in the city, do yourself a favor by visiting the city’s website and printing out a map of Virginia Beach’s parking facilities. That way, you’ll know where to park ahead of time.

Request a free Vacation Planner

The Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau puts out a detailed Vacation Planner listing events, restaurants, transportation options, historic sites, and art exhibits. The free guide is available for download on the bureau’s website; they also send out free copies on request.

Beware of the time share

If you’re not interested in purchasing a time share, brace yourself – Virginia Beach is crawling with salespeople trying to convince tourists that they should buy one. Beware of faux “tourist information” signs that lure unsuspecting visitors into the salesroom. If you’re unsure of whether or not a “tourist information” site is authentic, take a quick look inside – if there are ample brochures and informational pamphlets just inside the door, chances are the place is genuine.

Take the trolley

Skip the stress of driving and parking and use the VB Wave, Virginia Beach’s fleet of hybrid-electric trolleys. These eco-friendly shuttles serve the aquarium, various shopping centers, and the oceanfront. Service typically runs between Memorial Day to Labor Day; HRT buses provide transportation for the rest of the year. Shuttle hours of operation vary depending on the route, though most of them run between 8am-2am. Check their website for exact schedules.

Lighten the load by renting beach equipment

Packing up the car with beach chairs, sand toys, strollers, and umbrellas can be stressful. Leave it at home and rent what you need from a local business like Moneysworth – they have everything from beach equipment and baby gear to linens for your rental cottage.

Enjoy free entertainment

Families on a budget need not despair at the high cost of restaurants and entertainment in Virginia Beach – the city also offers a wealth of free entertainment at its various oceanfront parks. In summer, pick up inexpensive picnic fixings at the Farmer’s Market ( before heading to hear free live music at an outdoor stage like 17th Street Park.
