10 Microbreweries You Can Visit on a Cruise

The craft beer-making movement has gone global as microbreweries have popped up in more than 100 countries around the world. You'll now find them in some unexpected locations, where you can try beers unlike you've every encountered that were brewed using local ingredients and exotic flavors. Beer-loving cruisers will be happy to know some of the best are located in port cities, where you can skip the shore excursion and sample the local brews. Here are some of our favorite microbreweries around the world.

1. McCashin's Brewery

Port: Nelson, New Zealand

New Zealand's first microbrewery — and one of the first located outside the U.S. — opened in 1980 in an old cider factory in Nelson at the top end of the South Island. Stoke Beer and Rochdale Cider are both brewed here, and the 40-minute tour culminates in a beer garden where guests can also sample some nouvelle Kiwi cuisine. 

Order up: Stoke Gold is refreshing on a sunny New Zealand day, as are the apple and pear ciders.

2. BrewPub København

Port: Copenhagen, Denmark

Tucked inside a historic 17th-century building just off Copenhagen's Rådhuspladsen, this Danish microbrewery offers a variety of unfiltered beers straight from the stainless steel storage tanks, served with "new Danish beer cuisine" in the dining room or outdoor patio. In addition to its own concoctions, BrewPub features seven on-tap selections from other Danish microbreweries.

Order up: The BrewFather is a golden lager, and fans of bitter IPAs should go for the Geronimo.

Port: Copenhagen, Denmark

Order up: Moo Brew produces five core beers: a Pilsner, a German-style hefeweizen, a Belgian pale ale, an American pale ale, and an American dark ale.

Just steps away from this modern brew pub is Paulaner Bräuhaus Singapore, the island's only German-style microbrewery.

Order up: Archipelago's Singapore Blonde Ale is brewed with calamansi lime and pandan leaves.

Three Japanese sisters created Minoh Brewery, which is about 30 minutes outside Osaka. You can try their beers at one of the three brew pubs they also run in Osaka, including the popular Beer Belly Tenma in the Tenma district. 

Order up: Minoh Brewery has many award-winning beers, including the White Ale and Imperial IPA.

Fresh kosher beer is the forte at this craft brewery on the outskirts of Tel Aviv. It's also a fun place to spend a few hours — there's a gastro pub on site and an outdoor basketball court. Try the signature kosher sausages, homemade chopped liver, baked mangold and lentil patties, or beef kebabs with tahini.

Order up: Among Jem's seven beer varieties are a stout, wheat, IPA, amber, and dark lager.
