A cappella has come a long way since the heyday of the barbershop quartet. The eight performers of Voca People, a funny and fanciful show at New York City’s Westside Theatre, take the art of instrument-less music and make it out of this world – literally.

The story is simple: The performers are aliens from the planet Voca who are stuck on Earth and need musical energy to repower their ship to return home. They create incredible tunes and rhythms, imitating the sounds of musical instruments, using only their voices. It’s like a cross between Stomp and Glee, with a healthy dose of Blue Man Group!

While the kiddos are sure to love the wacky antics of the aliens from Voca, everyone can enjoy the vocal acrobatics and engaging performance. The sheer range of these performers, not to mention the physical choreography and expressive movements, has the audience on its feet by the end of the show.

Throughout the 90-minute show, the actors perform snippets of popular songs, from the Beach Boys’ hits to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as classic melodies from Handel and Mozart. Don’t be surprised if one of the Voca people jumps into the audience to rub your head – or even pull you up on stage for a soulful serenade.
