Summer's almost here, with the promise of days filled with barbecues and trips to the beach. But we're just as excited about the coming late-spring weeks. While it's not quite swim weather in some parts, it's now nice enough to enjoy most of what the outdoors has to offer -- before summer crowds and summer pricing kicks off in earnest. Here, just five trips in May that offer substantial pre-summer savings.

Montauk Yacht Club Resort and Marina (Montauk, NY)
You don’t need to be a member to stay at this 80-year-old resort. The property, a whopping 32 acres situated on a private lake beach, is getting a new life as old school heritage turns into barefoot chic with a community feel this season. Staying at one of the 103 guestrooms, two suites, and 23 villas should feel like visiting a friend's posh summer house -- complete with complimentary paddleboats, bicycles, and shuttle service into town. Even better, through May 21, the resort is offering reduced rates starting from $159 per night Sunday to Thursday and $259 for Friday and Saturday. Travelers who check in now will be the first to experience the reimagined bonfires, speakeasy vibe at night, overhauled food and drink programs, and more.

To nab that $159 price, check into admiral class king, double bed, or villa class king rooms this week. After that, the next best price is $181.32, which you can find May 3-7, 10-12 and 14. For the weekend warriors, the lowest weekend rates are for villa rooms with a king bed on May 8 and 9, at $248.30 per night, but you’ll have to stay a minimum of two nights.

Not convinced? Consider this: The lowest price that we found in June is $293, on the single night of June 4; in July, the least expensive room rate is $382, while August offers up rooms from around $472.

Note: The property does not accept Saturday arrivals -- meaning weekend stays must start on Fridays (or before).

Ale House Inn (Portsmouth, NH)
This century-old former seacoast brewery is now an inn that treats visitors to free WiFi, Lather toiletries, and complimentary bottled water. For Sunday through Thursday stays until the end of May, the Spring Has Sprung deal shaves 15 percent off room rates and tosses in a six-pack of locally brewed Smuttynose beer and shortbread cookies (a value of around $20).

To score a great price here, it’s better to check in sooner rather than later. For April 29-30 as well as May 3-6, 10, and 12-14, petite rooms are $129 per night. After applying the discount, you'd pay only only $110. With a little more, queens rooms are $139 -- or $120 post-discount -- for the last two days of April in addition to May 3-7 and 10-14. Oddly enough, king rooms are being offered for the same price; book those for April 29, May 4-5, 10, 12 and 13.

After May 17, we found that prices for all rooms increase noticeably, starting at $159 for a petite queen. Of course, that's still a good rate compared to the rest of summer, when a petite queen can be as much as $209 per night. We did see some $189 rates for queen and king rooms, but those rates push up to $239 into the season.

Wild Dunes Resort (Isle of Palms, SC)
Head south to this Charleston resort and find a variety of accommodations to choose from, including guestrooms, suites, condos, vacation rentals, and cottages. The Splash into Spring Savings promotion takes 15 percent off nightly rates, and adds a $50 dining credit, for reservations through May 31.

We found the month’s lowest rate of $152.15 to be available on May 3, in a Boardwalk Inn deluxe king room. $169.15 rates are available on a handful of other dates, including April 29-30, May 4-7, and May 25. For comparison, the lowest summer rate that we saw in the next three months is $259, in late August. (Plus, a three-night minimum is required.)

Park Hyatt Beaver Creek (Vail, CO)
The mountainside retreat is celebrating a big milestone this year with its 25th Anniversary offer. For stays through May 21, the resort is offering accommodations, daily $125 food and beverage credit, and 25 percent discount on select spa services. Nightly rates are from $250, which is what you'll find when checking into a standard king or double on April 29-30 and May 1-2 and 5-21. Without the offer, rates are from $179 -- but you don't get that generous food and beverage credit and spa discount.

Verdura Resort (Sicily)
Clamoring for a trip to Europe to see just how far that weak Euro will get you? Perhaps a stay at Verdura Resort is just the ticket. Until the end of May, the resort has two promotions on tap: the Spring Getaway and the Spring Suite offer.

With the Spring Getaway package, guests get 25 percent off the best flexible rate with a minimum four-night stay in addition to a welcome cocktail and complimentary WiFi. We found the lowest rate of €319 (around $345) to be available May 3-12 for a deluxe room. In comparison, room-only stays for the first week of June are priced at €333 if you pay in advance. In July and August, the lowest flexible rate we could spot is €595.

The Spring Suite offer includes 33 percent off the best flexible rate when staying at least four nights. Those booking a suite will also get daily breakfast, daily bottle of water, and in-room entertainment, aside from those spacious accommodations. Our search turned up the lowest rate of €427 ($467) for check-ins May 3-12 in a junior suite. For the summer months, prices are from €713.
