National Skyscraper Day, which falls on September 3 this year, is a bit obscure as most holidays days go. But here's a related celebration that any traveler can appreciate: a Chicago hotel that's commemorating the day with a week of $99 rates.Hyatt Regency Chicago is offering up standard rooms at that blockbuster rate as well as a free upgrade to a city view room. The promotion is good from stays from September 1 to September 5, bookable now through the 5th. For comparison, typical September starting rates fall between $169 and $249 on the weekdays, with some weekend rates being even higher. So while you save a minimum of 40 percent, you'll find yourself enjoying recently revamped digs, a part of a $168 million property renovation. Guest rooms, redone in a chic grey and orange scheme, feature work desks, plasma televisions, iHome alarm clocks, and -- in the bathrooms -- KenetMD toiletries.
For the hungry traveler, the makeover has also introduced four new food and drink concepts to the hotel. There's American Craft Kitchen & Bar on the atrium level for more casual dining; the continent’s longest free-standing bar, BIG Bar, for evening libations; and upscale surf-and-turf at Stetsons Modern Steak + Sushi, for a special treat. We especially love the rotating daily lunch special (prices vary) and flight of three beers ($12) at the first venue.
More to love: Staying at Hyatt Regency Chicago means you can walk to many of the city's happening spots, including restaurants and attractions in the Loop and River North. The hotel is also a block off North Michigan Avenue, lined with drool-worthy architecture and boutiques selling fashion apparel. Plus, you’re a mile from the country’s second Eataly (the first is in New York City) -- Mario Batali’s Italian-foods powerhouse, complete with 23 restaurants, that just opened this past December.
