File under "seriously cool New Year’s Eve ideas:” ringing in 2018 twice in one night — once in Finland and again in Swedish Lapland — on this three-night Scandinavia trip.
Priced at approximately $1,588 per person, the trip spans Dec. 30 to Jan. 2 and includes a three-night stay in a double balcony room at a recently renovated luxury hotel in Sweden, the Grand Arctic Hotel, plus a three-hour dogsledding excursion (normally around $179) and a four-course dinner and two parties in Sweden and Finland on New Year’s Eve.
The double celebration takes place along the frozen Torne River, which will be lined with ice bars, bonfires, and a traditional sauna. You’ll countdown with a complimentary Champagne toast to fireworks in Finland before heading across the river to Sweden where the time is an hour earlier, to do it all again. And if the Northern Lights are on your bucket list, note this is prime viewing season, so your chances for spotting the phenomenon are optimal.
Itineraries are customized to each traveler, so you can arrange your trip according to your group size and activity level. For example, you can add reindeer sled driving, mini golf or curling, or a day in the spa to your itinerary.
Note that the trip doesn’t include airfare, so you’ll have to book your own flights to Sweden's Lulea airport (we found round-trip tickets for $870 on these dates from NYC, bringing the total of the trip to $2,458). Transfers to and from the airport are included.
Even with the extra cost of the airfare, this is a smart time to visit Scandinavia. The notoriously expensive region sees lower prices at this time of year, with flights around $200 cheaper than peak summertime dates and hotels hundreds less.
