California’s Mendocino coast, three hours north of San Francisco, is wild and rugged. It's home to beaches, lighthouses, farm-to-fork cafes, beautiful botanical gardens, and -- of course -- winery tasting rooms. One seaside property in the area, Little River Inn, is offering rates as low as $159 per night this winter. Two miles south of Mendocino, Little River Inn is turning 75 this year. If you wanted a reason to join the celebrations, oceanview rooms with fireplaces are $159 per night from November 28 through December 17, or $195 through September and the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. Compare those prices to fall rates: Throughout October, an oceanview room without a fireplace would set you back $378 per night, dropping only slightly to $318 for the first weekend in November. That means sneaking a trip in between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve can save up to 58 percent.
The Victorian-style inn, managed by fifth-generation innkeepers, is perched above the Pacific Ocean. Each room has access to a veranda, so you can count on views of the sea -- and perhaps even whales, since December kicks off the whale-watching season here. Sunsets here are gorgeous, but you can simply relax with a good book and cup of hot tea any time of the day.
On site, a restaurant serves breakfast and dinner (and Sunday brunch), featuring dishes that take advantage of the local bounty. Think Dungeness crab cakes, Roundman’s bacon, Anderson Valley chestnuts, and the inn’s own signature mustard. A day spa helps guests further unwind with warm-stone massages and seaweed body scrubs. Of course, don't forget all the scenic hiking along the ocean just beyond property grounds.
