Is there anything more hip than a hotel that’s tucked in a converted warehouse?

Ovolo Southside is a 162-room property that popped up this summer along Hong Kong’s artsy South Coast, in the town of Wong Chuk Hang. With art in abundance and a rooftop bar, too, this is the sixth Ovolo Hotel to open in Hong Kong. (The hotel group also has a property in in Melbourne.) And just as exciting as the trendy digs are the low costs of enjoying them.

Room rates start at $111 USD in November and December, and if you book 14 days in advance you can take advantage of 20 percent off. (With a week’s notice, you’d save 15 percent). Even into the first three months of 2015, nightly rates hover around $130 -- a very reasonable price considering the free perks, like unlimited mini-bar items, breakfast, WiFi, and drink happy hours. The rooms themselves are also very plush. All six room categories feature a rainfall shower, toiletries by Malin + Goetz, 47-inch flatscreen TVs, and great views of Hong Kong through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Meals at CIRQLE on the fourth floor are influenced by the Mediterranean and East Asia alike (think: littleneck clams with lemongrass). The 24-hour Lo Lounge is home base for the aforementioned nightly happy hours -- when wine, beer, and canapés are served for free to guests -- as well as coffee in the mornings. And, for those who like to live it up, let’s not forget ABOVE, which sports a nightclub vibe with a rooftop setting and DJs.

We love finding high design at low prices, and that's exactly what's happening here. Ovolo's designers have brought the hotel back to its 1970s industrial roots, seen in details like exposed steel water pipes and exposed bricks. The hotel also tapped a local art collective (Parent's Parents) along with Los Angeles-based mural artists for vibrant graffiti in the hallways and murals spanning the rooftop -- so you don't even have to leave the property to get a taste of the neighborhood's creativity.

Note: While Hong Kong's Occupy Central protests are ongoing, the protests have been largely peaceful and are very contained to specific gathering points in the Admiralty, Mong Kok, and Causeway Bay neighborhoods. Travelers should simply plan for slight transit delays (heavier for a few routes to gathering points), otherwise visits should be business as usual.
