How to Experience Vienna Like a Local

by  Kristen Boatright | Mar 30, 2016

A major stop on Danube River cruises, Vienna is a vibrant city with a rich cultural scene, from opera and concert halls to world-class museums — not to mention imperial palaces. Another big part of the city's past, as well as its present, is the vibrant coffeehouse culture. Visitors looking for a more local travel experience can grab a seat at a coffee shop and spend the afternoon or evening lingering over coffee and conversation, like the Viennese have been doing for more than a century. During a recent visit to Vienna, we were on the lookout for the local experience and met Dieter von Jettmar through Vienna Unwrapped, a site that regularly organizes Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations. These dinner events pair locals with travelers to revive the spirit of debate that has brewed in these coffeehouses for over 100 years.

Vienna Coffeehouse Conversations typically take place at night on the last Thursday of each month at Cafe Ministerium. The events are held in English and cost $12 - $26. To book, visit:
