The Radisson Royal Hotel Moscow (formerly the Hotel Ukraina) opened May 18 in one of the famous “Seven Sisters” structures commissioned by Stalin in the 1950s. At the time, this 34-floor Radisson Blu property – a 20-minute walk from Red Square – was the tallest hotel in Europe!

Three years of renovations to the hotel’s 506 rooms and 38 apartments (for long-term stays) resulted in a mix of contemporary and classical furnishings, with sumptuous amenities including Penhaligon’s bath products and Frette robes. The 11,000-square-foot spa and fitness center also received a modern upgrade. Guests at the Radisson can appreciate a healthy dose of culture – 1,200 works by Russian artists adorn the walls, and the private library contains 3,000 volumes of literature, travel guides, and multi-lingual dictionaries.

Going boldly beyond borscht and beef Stroganoff, the hotel’s five restaurants represent an international feast with Mediterranean, Iranian, Italian, Japanese, and international fusion options (the latter headed by celebrated Moscow chef Arkady Novikov). Prefer to dine with a view? Hop on one of the Radisson’s five private yachts for a lunch or dinner cruise along the Moskva River.

Summer rates at this splurge-worthy hotel start at $360/night, but with a little planning you can score a room for $270/night – through January 31, 2011, book at least 21 days in advance and all rooms are 25 percent off.
