Expert Review

Occupying the engineers’ and shipwright’s offices in what became Nelson’s Dockyard, the impeccably restored 18th-century “Ads” (as yachties fondly christen it) reverberates with history, down to then-Captain Nelson’s sailors supposedly scrawling their names in the ancient timber bar. Original weathered stone, brickwork, hardwood floors, and timber beams accentuate the authentic Anglo-ambience. The 14 cozy rooms (and two-bedroom loft) feature iron braces, whitewashed brick, and antiques or reproductions like four-poster beds. Those upstairs in the original building overlook the yachts preening in the harbor. Meals (like pumpkin soup and snapper with limes) on the breezy stone terrace are delightful.
