Expert Review

The refined 1932 Alvear Palace is a favorite of visiting kings, queens, emirs, and presidents, and for good reason. Guests are pampered with butler service (Don’t feel like packing or unpacking, or drawing your own bath water? Well, we have a butler for that…), and the hotel’s expert attention to detail includes daily flowers and fruit baskets in the rooms and teddy bears for young guests. Decorated with Louis XIV- to Louis XVI-style furnishings, the hotel has 97 rooms and 100 suites, and was named a historic monument of Buenos Aires in 2003. Some of the rooms are on the small side, but all come with complimentary Wi-Fi, garment pressing on arrival, 500-thread-count linens, Hermès bath products, LCD TVs with DVD players, and actual doorbells in the halls. The 8,600-square-foot spa and fitness center has a host of La Prairie-focused treatments, including the nearly five-hour “Alvear Experience,” which includes a milk- and rose-petal immersion, steam room, sauna, four-hand massage, facial, body polish, and glass of sparkling wine. The Alvear’s French restaurant, La Bourgogne, has its own private wine cellar accommodating up to 40 guests, while its L’Orangerie and Jardin d’Hiver offer the most lavish breakfasts in the city and afternoon tea served by white-gloved waiters on Limoges china. For more manly pursuits, the wood-paneled lobby bar has been a city favorite ever since the hotel opened 80 years ago, and a cigar bar, also offering gourmet chocolates, was added in 2009.
