TOMS Tours

"Voluntourism" is a trend that ShermansTravel embraces, but with a grain of reserve since providing aid is complicated enough without having to factor in the comfort of paying guests. TOMS Tours is one operator that pulls it off successfully. The organization is an arm of TOMS Shoes, the California-based nonprofit that sells hip, comfortable lightweight slip-ons modeled after Argentine alpargatas. With every pair bought, TOMS donates one to a child in need. TOMS employees hand-deliver the shoes to rural villages in several countries and in 2008 began allowing volunteers to join them on its shoe drops in Argentina. Interest surged, and the company formed TOMS Tours. The group offers eight-day trips to Argentina and, as of this year, tours to New Orleans and South Africa. During a typical trip, half the time is spent distributing the shoes and the rest on local excursions - from horseback riding along Argentina's Salta region to spying animals in South Africa's Ubizane Wildlife Reserve. 2009 Smart Luxury Award winner
