Getting to Great Barrier Reef


Flights from the U.S. via Tokyo (NRT) arrive into Cairns International Airport (CNS). Many flights also connect through Brisbane International Airport (BNE) and Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport (SYD). Domestic connections are then made to the Great Barrier Reef Airport on Hamilton Island (HTI) and Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine (PPP), approximately 30 minutes from Airlie Beach.


Qantas Airways is Australia’s major international airline, but Continental, Delta, Northwest, and United also offer connecting flights to Cairns. Domestic carriers include QantasLink, Jetstar, and Virgin Blue.

19-24 hours from Los Angeles to Cairns (depending on connections). 26-28 hours from New York to Cairns (depending on connections).
