Expert Review

Some say diving on the Great Barrier Reef gets better as you head north, and the 2,500-acre Lizard Island is about as far north as you can go. Located a 45-minute flight from Cairns, just one resort occupies the otherwise deserted island, and although pricey, it’s a terrific splurge for the ultimate in chic, understated luxury. The granite island is ringed by two dozen crescent beaches and surrounded by pristine reefs – grab a picnic basket and a motorized dinghy to beach yourself at a private cove (don’t forget your snorkel for the reefs right off the shore). Sunset sails, spa treatments, and hiking are other diversions to help you decompress on this castaway isle. At the world-famous Cod Hole, 300-pound grouper pose like giant puppy dogs for hand-feedings by snorkelers and divers. Rates are all-inclusive, per person, though diving and fishing trips (for black marlin, August through December) are extra.
