Expert Review

Situated 22 miles north of Cairns and 10 miles south of Port Douglas on an ocean-side bluff, Thala Beach Lodge is a family-owned, 84-room eco-resort. Accommodations here are wood bungalows situated at varying elevations around the rise, and with views ranging from eucalyptus-engulfed forest to casuarina-framed Coral Sea panoramas. Save for one romantic suite, the rooms are identical in size and all have the desired mod-cons: air-conditioning, marble bath, minibar, and sprawling decks. The 145-acre property features two great rock-grotto swimming pools, a long and quiet beach, and a restaurant serving memorable meals (it’s a 10-minute drive to the nearest off-property options). Although activities tend to be subdued the lodge organizes nightly seminars featuring nature slide shows, aboriginal culture, and astronomy – in fact there’s a small observatory tucked into the rainforest that takes advantage of the location’s negligible ambient light. The hotel arranges day trips to the Great Barrier Reef through Port Douglas operators.
