Outback Itineraries

Long Weekend

The Outback is not the kind of place you can fully appreciate in a long weekend. However, if a few days are all you can afford to tack on to your Australian itinerary, your best bet is to make a B-line for the Red Center and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. After arriving at Ayers Rock Airport, settle into your hotel before exploring your new surroundings – follow the base walk around Uluru; visit the nearby Uluru–Kata Tjuta Cultural Center; take a drive out to the Olgas; or simply be inspired by the ever-changing colors of this magnificent monolith.

One Week

Divide your time equally between the Top End and the Red Center. Spend around 3-4 days at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park taking in both the Olgas and Uluru, then head to Alice Springs for 1 day before catching a flight to Darwin (Alice Springs is around a 5-hour drive from Uluru, so you can alternatively fly direct from Ayers Rock Airport to Darwin). Spend your last 3-4 days exploring Darwin and one of the nearby national parks including Litchfield, Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge), and the World Heritage-listed Kakadu.

Two Weeks

Hire a car and drive the 1,250 miles from Uluru to Darwin (this can also be done in reverse). Start by arriving at Ayers Rock Airport, spending around 3 days at Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park before driving on to Alice Springs (1-2 days) and stopping en route to go walkabout (a walking trip or tour) in Kings Canyon (2 days). Continuing on the long drive north, you’ll overnight in the small town of Tennant Creek, then head on to cruise Katherine Gorge (2 days) and check out the ancient art of Kakadu (2-3 days) before arriving in Darwin (1-2 days). Two weeks is also ideal for traveling on the Ghan train from Adelaide across the Outback to Darwin, stopping in Alice Springs for 4 days.
