Expert Review

A Sydney landmark since the day it opened, the Observatory Hotel appears like a historic enclave hidden within Sydney's oldest neighborhood - it's actually a purpose-built four-story structure dating only to 1993, when Orient-Express opened the 100-room hotel. Filled with astronomical antiques and Victorian furnishings, the property exudes traditional elegance while layering on contemporary creature comforts: large rooms wrapped in lavish drapes, DVD players, dual sinks, oversized baths, and attentive service. The French-Japanese fusion gastronomic restaurant Galileo, a La Prairie Spa, a voluptuous indoor pool topped with a southern hemisphere star-scape, and Sydney's most popular Sunday High Tea round out the offerings. Named after an adjacent observatory, the hotel offers a nifty package that visits the star-gazing facility one evening where you can adopt and name your own star - that's romantic.
