Expert Review

Staying on (or near) the sexy strands of Ipanema and Copacabana isn't the only way to experience Rio; in fact, if you really want to feel like an insider, skip the sand and spend a few nights in a local artist's 19th-century mansion in the picturesque hills of bohemian Santa Teresa (accessible from downtown via rickety trolley ride, a can't-miss experience in itself). Cama e Café, a B&B network with several houses in the neighborhood, coordinates with local residents who provide comfortable rooms and breakfast, not to mention captivating conversation (if so desired). Guests and hosts can be matched up by interest (fashion mavens can stay with a local designer; yoga buffs can stay in houses with yoga studios, etc.). The house we stayed at, Casa Renata, was packed with eye-popping artworks, had a small balcony overlooking downtown Rio, and housed two adorable pet turtles (yes, it’s also WiFi-equipped). Book in advance for high season (December to March).
