Expert Review

The 222-room Copacabana Palace, now part of the Orient-Express hotel group, has been welcoming well-heeled guests (including the likes of Walt Disney, Liza Minelli, Oscar de la Renta, and Princess Diana) since 1923, when it opened as Rio's first world-class resort. Ipanema may be cleaner and trendier, but if you insist on Grand Dame accommodations that evoke the Art Deco-era glamour of the Cote d'Azur, well, this is it. Just keep in mind that Copacabana can get choked with busloads of tourists, package-tour operators, trinket vendors, and bauble shops (Ipanema is a 25-minute walk away). As long as you're ensconced here, why not go all the way? With spacious private verandas overlooking the crescent-shaped beach, the penthouse suites offer the most exhilarating views (though one of the seven suites has a less-spectacular city view). Even if you don't stay overnight, head to the hotel's informal Pérgula for afternoon tea next to the sexy "semi"-Olympic-size pool - or play dress-up and dine at Cipriani, an Italian restaurant that evokes the Copacabana's sister Hotel Cipriani in Venice.
