Expert Review

After the Montreal Gazette moved to a new space in 2003, Westin took over the newspaper’s old headquarters, merging the building with a new 23-story tower and two other historic structures on the block to create a 454-room hotel (opened June 2009). A covered carport entrance shields arriving guests from summer rain showers or harsh Montreal winters. Rooms sport the typical minimalist Westin décor, with pillowtop mattresses, walk-in showers, and Wi-Fi. Splurge on an Executive Club Room for perks like free happy hour in the 22nd-floor Club Lounge (with jaw-dropping views of Montreal harbor), or book a room in one of the historic towers for a boutique hotel feel. In a nod to the building’s past incarnation, the Gazette restaurant serves up contemporary Mediterranean-inspired fare, while the Reporter bar pairs classic cocktails with tasty tapas. A glass-bottom pool (visible from the hotel’s entranceway) is as much a novelty family photo opportunity as it is a peep show.
