Expert Review

During Shanghai’s 1920s heyday the city was known as the Paris of the Orient, and this was the Far East’s most luxurious hotel. Though the days when lavish society balls were held in its Peacock Ballroom are long gone (and after a period as both the Shanghai Stock Exchange and later a hostel) the Astor House Hotel’s been renovated, though not to its former opulence. Today it is an excellent value hotel to recreate old time Shanghai, replete with creaking wood-floor corridors, high-ceilinged rooms, and photos of famous guests (such as US President Grant and Albert Einstein). The vast rooms are rather basic, but the location at the north of the Bund is exceptional – river-facing rooms command magnificent views. There is also a Chinese restaurant, business center, and beauty salon.
