Expert Review

Occupying five neo-classical 1930s villas on a leafy estate once owned by a British newspaper baron, this statuesque hotel is a Shanghai institution. Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh bedded down here, and much of its guest list is reminiscent of a Who’s Who of post-war Chinese political history. The setting and gardens are magnificent, though despite ongoing renovations the interior décor and service standards can be found a little lacking. That said, it’s a good-value pick for guests seeking to stay in one of Shanghai’s most historic hotels. The 71 rooms range from standard to executive suite and all have cable TV, minibar, and central air conditioning. The estate features a fine array of international bars and restaurant; other amenities include a business center, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, and coffee shop.
