Expert Review

In the Nomosco neighborhood west of downtown, on a leafy street off main drag Paseo de Colón, this gracious clapboard oasis is the prettiest and most service-oriented of the capital’s several Victorian hostelries. It’s also known for its excellent indoor-outdoor destination restaurant, whose fare is a mix of classics (herb-encrusted rack of lamb with mint jelly, filet mignon in mushroom sauce) and sophisticated, locally-inspired fare along the lines of chicken breast encrusted with tropical seeds and toasted coffee beans, and topped in a chicken jus with blueberry preserves. Although there’s no pool, you can soak in the pair of Jacuzzis and sunbathe on a pretty rooftop terrace. A maze of hallways and open spaces adorned with historic photos, original artworks, Italian tile fountains, bird cages, tropical plants and flowers, and gardens connects 37 rooms and three suites. Each of the units is individually decorated and equipped with good size baths with oversize tubs or walk-in showers (the “superior” rooms are the largest). Mini-bar, safe, cable TV, A/C, and room service are standard.
