Expert Review

Opened in 2004, the Four Seasons’ only property in Central America sprawls across 99 acres of the 2,300-acre Peninsula Papagayo, in Guanacaste, on the Pacific coast. That figure doesn’t count the Arnold Palmer-designed, Audubon Certified Sanctuary 18-hole golf course, where you’re apt to come across a few howler and capuchin monkeys and coatis (if you don’t see them there, try the resort’s hiking path from Playa Blanca). Designed by Costa Rican architect Ronald Zürcher to resemble armadillos, leatherback turtles, and giant butterflies from above as a way of luring passing birds – there are nearly 900 species in the country – you’ll appreciate the resort’s various structures even more from the ground. Check into any of the 120 guest rooms (all with deep-soaking tubs, screened balconies or ground-floor patios, and then outfitted with rattan, bamboo, marble, and indigenous woods), 25 canopy suites, or 31 private villas. Then head to the 18-treatment-room spa, where the focus is on native treatments, like a natural healing bamboo massage, or green coffee, seaweed, or volcanic mud wraps. Unwind further at any of the resort’s three heated pools or two beaches, where attendants will ply you with a parade of treats. When you eventually grow hungry, you can explore the resort’s four restaurants (Costa Rican, Italian, Latin eclectic, and steak), lounge (sushi and snacks), or neighboring Prieta Beach Club (seafood). A fleet of 35 club cars will whisk you around the resort, so you don’t have to walk anywhere if you don’t want to. But active guests can try tennis (four Har-Tru courts, plus the only grass court of any Four Seasons property), golf, miniature golf, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, yoga, and nearby horseback riding, surfing, zip-lining, deep-sea fishing, hot-spring and volcano visits. The family-friendly resort also has a teen center, and programs for children ages 4 and up.
