Expert Review

Located near the Charles Bridge in Prague's Malá Strana neighborhood (the same side of the Vltava as the iconic Prague Castle), The Augustine is one link in British hotelier Sir Rocco Forte's luxury chain, which also includes Brown's in London and The Balmoral in Edinburgh. The hotel is made up of seven newly-connected historic buildings, the largest of which was formerly part of the 13th-century Augustinian St. Thomas' Monastery - hence the hotel's name. The central monastery and adjacent church are still functioning - guests can access the cloisters through a private door - but what were once monk's cells and common areas have been combined and converted into 101 rooms and suites. Designer Olga Polizzi (in conjunction with London-based design company RDD) pays homage to the monastic connection with a clean, meditative décor of ash wood floors, muted jewel tones, and crisp white bedding, mixed with decorative objects, art work, and furnishings that reflect Czech Cubist, Modernista and avant-garde traditions. All rooms boast oversized baths, a selection of hardcover books, flat-screen TVs and Internet connections (the latter a whopping $30 a day), while each suite features something special like a fireplace or panoramic views. In addition to an atrium restaurant, there's a chic indoor/outdoor lounge, a pub serving beer brewed from the monastery's own recipe, and a spa performing organic treatments, including one that uses St. Thomas beer.
