Expert Review

This venture was born in the late ‘90s when the owner, a Scandinavian Harvard Business School grad and his wife, decided the area needed a golf resort and country club. Their guidelines: Good food, good golf, good wine. The wine tenet is easy – the resort is in Bergerac, a rich wine region between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The owners restored a 16th-century château that dates back to 1597, when it was the country retreat of a judge named Vigier. They cultivated a 45-acre vineyard that produces eight types of red, rosé, and dry and sweet white wines, and commissioned a golf course that has grown to its current 27 holes. The château’s rooms are beautifully appointed with antiques handpicked by the wife, who scoured the area’s brocantes (antique markets) for pieces from or in the style of the 16th century. There’s also a brand-new, eco-friendly modern building constructed from local woods whose 40 rooms are attractive and upscale but don’t have the charm of the region.
