Expert Review

This hotel is named for the toile fabric sold by the current owner’s great-grandparents back when the Dordogne River was still an active trade route. (They simultaneously dealt in fabric and ran an auberge for weary travelers.) The low-slung building nestles at the base of a wall of high, south-facing cliffs that sit opposite the Dordogne River; its terraced restaurant and most of its rooms overlook the winding waterway. (The rest of the village is built into the cliffs above and is accessed by steep, narrow paths.) Rooms are small, spare, clean, and attractive, furnished with a few antiques and pieces of art. Large windows open onto the river and its forested northern bank. Some guests benefit from the climbing jasmine on the hotel’s façade whose scent immeasurably sweetens a stay. The restaurant is well-regarded and, like the hotel, is a good value with dishes like guinea fowl with truffle-specked risotto and walnut crème brulée (walnuts are an area specialty).
