Expert Review

This truly magical spot in the Bergerac region of Southwest France between Bordeaux and Toulouse exudes the warmth of its hosts, Hélène Boulet and Francois Passebon, who ran a hotel in a nearby village for 20 years before they bought this stone farmhouse in 2007 and renovated it completely on their own. (Passebon’s before/after pictures are dramatic and show the couple hard at work.) The oldest part of the structure dates back to the 15th century and the rest is 17th and 18th century. Beautifully decorated with Persian rugs and precious antiques, the grand rooms ring a courtyard that’s lush with flowering bushes, palm trees, intricate stonework, and a waterlily pond.  Most rooms also have fireplaces (the hotel is open year-round) and French doors that open out onto the fields and vineyards. Hélène and Francois’s hospitality extends to Hélène’s wonderful, gourmet country fare (think cassoulet, duck with Armagnac sauce, pear-and-chocolate cake) served with delicious wines made by neighboring vineyards.
