Expert Review

Body (100-200 words): This stylish hotel, set in a pale stone, 8th-century hunting lodge atop a hill outside the medieval village of Penne d’Agenais, has interiors straight out of Elle Décor. Thick, stone walls and beamed ceilings of rough-hewn wood mix with romantic antiques and brooding art. There are playful, quirky touches, including minimalist chandeliers made by a local artist and hung with bits of paper that read “charme” and “calme.” The views are picturesque – windows frame a lush valley of rolling hills, grazing goats, and the Relais’ sleek outdoor pool. The look of the place mirrors the personal style of owner Nathalie Guigné, a former antiques dealer who escaped the hustle and bustle of Paris for this peaceful spot. She came into the hotel biz in 2006 when she bought and restored this estate. There are two large rooms in the main building and two gîtes – separate buildings housing two bedrooms each and private kitchens.
