Expert Review

This refined hotel in the handsome stone village of Trémolat was one of Relais & Chateaux’s first properties and has been in the same family for 450 years. In 1952, that family turned it from a home into a hotel, but it still feels like you’re visiting the country retreat of an aristocratic French friend. The hotel’s grounds consist of a group of 17th-century buildings that were once a busy hive of tobacco cultivation. Tobacco leaves were hung to dry in what is now the high-ceilinged dining room. Le Vieux Logis’ public rooms are warm and inviting, with comfy couches and wonderful antiques; a clubby smoking room for men is hung with hunting prints and black-and-white photos of fencing teams. Vents in the ceiling can handle a preponderance of cigars. The rooms themselves are luxurious – each one is unique – and the bathrooms have all the latest amenities. (Ask for Henry Miller’s favorite: Room #4.) A carved stone swimming pool fed by spring water is surrounded by lush and immaculately landscaped gardens.
