Expert Review

A little distance away from the historic center of Bordeaux but easily accessible by tram, the Seeko’o Hotel looms over the River Garonne like a giant iceberg. (“Seeko’o” means “iceberg” in Inuit.) The owner came up with the name after the architect designed an outer skin made entirely of white Corian that stands out like a, well, like a giant iceberg when lined up cheek-to-jowl with Bordeaux’s typical yellow-limestone facades. Inside, a black-and-white palette is accented with pops of red and the natural features like slate floors and carpeting printed with river stones save the place from being wholly cold and modern. There are also whimsical touches – the rooms’ numbers are screen-printed onto the walls behind each bed. (The numbers aren’t on the room keys, and the designer wanted to make sure guests didn’t forget them.) Fuzzy curtains divide bedroom from bathroom in each room, and imprinted on the mirrors are the commands: “Talk, watch, stroll, rest . . . smile.”
